Bottom Line

Prayer is not to be a monologue, but a dialogue.

God is a God who speaks

God speaks in a lot of different ways.

The most common way God speaks is through a still small voice.

"The less dramatic the message, the fuller the content and the more advanced the person who is receiving the message"
— Dallas Willard

What is God’s still small voice?

The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
Proverbs 20:27
The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice… “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.
John 10:2-5, 14-15

Jesus wants us to know Him and be able to recognize His voice.

"We learn to hear God as we might learn to hear anyone — by experience."
— Dallas Willard

  1. Listen with the right motives
  2. Pay attention to how God speaks to you
  3. Be open to corroboration

Action Steps

Pray - Create some space with Jesus to pray through the following:

  • Am I doing life with Jesus on daily basis?
  • What are some ways God has spoken to me?
  • When have I sensed God’s still small voice?
  • Who in my life can support me in hearing from God?

Practice

  • Create 10-15 minutes each day this week to simply listen for God’s voice
