Message Notes
Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:1-5

Here’s the why:

  • Judging blinds me to seeing myself in reality.
  • Judging leads me to assuming the role of savior.
  • Judging is really me seeking status by serving others.

“Judging others makes us blind, whereas love is illuminating. By judging others we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.”
-Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Here’s the how: Face my own flaws first.

  • Notice speck spotting.
  • Pivot speck spotting into mirror moments.
  • Be the brother.
  • Get close.
You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written:
“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’”
So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.
Romans 14:10-13

“The fact that censoriousness and hypocrisy are forbidden us does not relieve us of brotherly responsibility towards one another.”
-John Stott
