Message Notes
On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.
Acts 20:7-12

Discipleship requires ongoing investment and encouragement.

Luke is showing his readers why Paul is someone who should be trusted in the early years of this movement by drawing parallels with Jesus and Old Testament prophets.

Bottom Line

Don't let your self-focus keep you from seeing the people and needs around you.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
Matthew 23:23
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
I Corinthians 13
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
James 1
“I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.Away with the noise of your songs!I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!
Amos 5

Action Steps

  • Spend 10 minutes prayerfully asking God to bring to mind people in your life who might be "sitting on the window sill." Find a way to demonstrate God's love and power to them this week.
  • If you resonate with Eutychus... tell someone!
  • Pray about starting or joining a group this fall.
